Chinese Cut

The other side of the IPL

May 13, 2009 · 8 Comments

It is very easy to hate the IPL, its organizer Lalit Modi and the broadcasters of the event.

But as much as we blame the IPL for the ostentatious display of cash and glamour (most of which is justified), we have to appreciate them for their contributions to the South African community.

The IPL organizing committee and its sponsors have contributed to a scholarship corpus of 8 Million Rands under what is called the IPL’s Help Educate and Teach (HEAT) initiative.

The beneficiaries will be meritorious students hailing from poor families, whose educational needs will be met from the proceeds of this fund.

More information about this initiative can be read here.

See, I’m sure Neil Manthorp wrote for a paper about this and outed the IPL for basically hastily starting up this education grant thing after things got a little frosty with the locals. And there was something about how the scheme really wasn’t going to benefit the right people, but of course, I’ve forgotten most of the article and even lost the link.

Any scholarship extended by an Indian institution doesn’t reach the deserved. This has always been the case.

I had always criticized them. So i thought I’d praise them for a change.

I have the link to Manthorp’s article, Amy. It’s at my blog here: http://duckingbeamers.wordpress.com/2009/04/29/ipl-rich-bully-their-way-around-south-africa/

Needless to say, I think H.E.A.T. is so much marketing nonsense.

I work at the Umbogavango Environmental Resource Centre. We are a non-profit organisation which provides environmental education to children from our local schools. Our centre is in dire needs of funds to continue providing our kids with quality environmental education. I hope to be considered through the HEAT program for funding to be donated to our centre. We are not a school, But we do provide valuable education to children on how to live sustainable lives.

    Thanks for the article DB.

Viloshinee, we have nothing to do with the BCCI/IPL. You should try posting it on their blog at iplt20.com. You might receive some help that way.

It is very unfortunate to hear about this Adam. But you must get in touch with the authorities concerned.
