There are two common misconceptions in T20 cricket.
1) Technically sound batsmen can adapt to any form of Cricket.
Not always true. The Bangalore Royal Challengers are the best possible example. Dravid, Kallis, Chanderpaul and Jaffer can bat to eternity to save a test match. However, none of them have been able to do well in T20.
2) A team packed with hard-hitting batsmen will be a success in T20 cricket.
Not always true. The Deccan Chargers are the best possible example. Gilchrist, Gibbs, Styris and Afridi can individually take a game away from the opposition on their day. But they have not managed it till now.
In fact, the teams with not-so-famous (but utilitarian) cricketers have been winning consistently.
Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Superkings have managed to win with all-round team performances instead of relying heavily on one ‘impact’ player.

Another common misconception about T20 – Bowlers are second class citizens.
In fact we have seen that the teams that bowl well have been the one’s who’ve performed the best in T20.
Let’s not forget that even in T20, you still need to take wickets & get 10 men out.

Very rightly so. The teams with the best bowlers have managed to do well.
And your ‘Post Comment’ thing is still not working currycricketer.

Mostly this comment is to see if I get my old two-arms-pointing-up monster icon.

In fact, that was the only point of my comment. I see that there actually not monsters, but these other things. It looks like I get the same one across different WordPress blogs.

You’ll get back the monsters you wanted David.
I’ll change the settings for you.

another misconception T20…
its so short a format that captain has virtually nothing to do…
ask warne, pollock?
12th Man // May 12, 2008 at 4:29 pm |
I don’t completely agree with you Straight Point.
I admit the fact that captains at times can do nothing about things. But smart field placements and rotating bowlers are very important in T20 cricket. Pollock has had problems, Warney has been smart i feel.

Thanks for that 12th Man.
I’m not convinced that Deccan are as bad as their results. A team with hard hitters should make big scores, and hence win matches.

Got the comments working now mate – some issues came up when upgrading WP with my current theme.
Cheers for detecting it mate – I’d have just sat here thinking no one wanted to comment about my stuff.

David,
A team with big hitters must ideally win matches. However, deccan haven’t quite managed that. And not all big hitters have fired in this tournament. Consitency is lacking. That was my point.
Currycricketer,
I don’t have access to your site from office. It is blocked. I will read your blogs and comment on them whenever i access your site from home.

Dave, I refer to my first post – you still need to bowl well in cricket. If you bowl well, you can contain a team from getting a high score. Deccan’s bowling line up just doesn’t cut it unfortunately.

12th man
you got it wrong mate!
i wanted to highlight that captaincy is infact as much relevent in T20 ….hence the name of warne and pollock
David Barry // May 13, 2008 at 9:35 pm |
currycricketer, I see your point. I assumed that all teams had good bowlers, but Deccan have been making a lot of use of Scott Styris…. I still think that the Deccan batting scores are lower than they should be though.

Straight Point,
Sorry mate! Yeah, i got it wrong.
